WHAT TO DO WHILE STAYING IN BOOTHBAY HARBOR REGION
To get to Boothbay Harbor, you simply make a left out of our driveway, and then left again on to West Side Road at the end of Higbee Lane. Just keep going, across the two bridges. (about five miles). As you come to the intersection with the monument of the soldier, the town hall will be directly our right. Turn right onto SR-27. You can continue on Route 27 into Boothbay Harbor. About a 15 minute drive from house to Boothbay Harbor.
Railway Museum – located on Route 27. Great fun for young children. Antique auto display for children of all ages!
Ocean Point – beautiful scenery, rocky beach and a little swimming area. Head toward Boothbay Harbor and at the traffic light with Hannaford Grocery Store on your right, make a left onto Route 96. Follow to the end.
Burnt Island Lighthouse Tour Wonderful historical tour of one of the oldest lighthouses still operating. May not be interesting for children under 5. Take the boat from Pier 8 in Boothbay Harbor. There are other lighthouses too. Just see the book at the cabin for more information.
Hiking the Local Land Trust Properties is one of our favorite activities. There are two on Barter's Island plus others in the area. Info in the "book" at the cabin.
Aquarium – a must for families with young children! Located just outside of the harbor, it is small but full of wonderful exhibits. Follow Route 27 to the harbor and turn right at the library. Follow this road about five miles and make a left onto McKown Point Road and follow to the end. Entrance fee is low.
Carousel Music Theater – on Route 27 just before Hannaford. Live dinner theater where the actors are your wait staff. May not be interesting to younger children.
Sail the Lazy Jack from the harbor. Beautiful sailing vessel leaves from Pier One, next to McSeagull’s. Two hour sails or private charters available
Maine Maritime Museum – located in Bath, approximately 30 minutes south on Route 1. Fantastic historical museum and surrounding buildings depicting the history of ship building, lobstering and other activities along the Maine coast.
Barrett Park - If you want to swim in the ocean or just relax and watch the boats, take the short ride to this lovely spot. Head to Boothbay Harbor and before you get to the area with all the shops, take a left at The Thistle Inn. Go down the hill and come to a traffic light. Go straight at the light and follow the road around to the back side of the Harbor. Just after the Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, make a left onto Lobster Cove Road. Follow about half mile and Barrett Park will be on your right, parking on the left.
Whale watching, sunset cruises, etc. – just head to Boothbay Harbor and choose one! There are so many!
LL Bean – located in Freeport, approximately 45 minutes south on Route 95. There is a small pond with live fish right in the middle of the store! Great shopping, many outlet stores and cute restaurants.

English fishermen originally discovered this area of Maine, back in the 17th century. Fishing, ice cutting, shipbuilding, and lumber were the local industries in the 18th and 19th century. By the 1800's visitors started coming to the area. Boothbay is the largest boating harbor north of Boston. In fact, it is sometimes called the boating capital of New England. In Boothbay Harbor there are many restaurants, souvenir shops, crafts and antiques. You can find many beautifully colored sailboats scattered in the bay. Boothbay is located in Maine's mid-coast region.
